Hi, I’m Jennifer Stein, founder of Mahj Over Matter and certified American Mahjong Instructor.

 

I began my career as a litigation attorney, but eventually stepped away from active practice to focus on my health and raising my family. Throughout my life, I’ve always loved strategy and games—and watched with interest as my mother played Mahjong with friends and neighbors. After she passed away in 2018, I was inspired to learn the game for myself, and it quickly grew from a curiosity into a true passion.

 

Today, I combine my legal background—with its emphasis on rules, clarity, and precision—with my love of teaching. My goal is to ensure that every student learns the standardized National Mah Jongg League rules correctly, so they can play with confidence at home or abroad. I use proven teaching techniques to make learning approachable, minimize overwhelm, and shorten the curve for beginners.

 

Beyond strategy, I deeply value Mahjong’s social side. As a self-proclaimed introvert, I appreciate how the structure of the table fosters connection and community. I’ve seen firsthand how the game brings people of all ages together, turning strangers into acquaintances and acquaintances into friends.

 

Having faced serious health challenges throughout my adult life, I know how important it is to find activities that spark joy—and that’s exactly what Mahjong has given me, and what I hope to share with you. Wherever you are in your Mahjong journey, I’d love to welcome you to the table!
