What to Expect

This 2½-hour workshop is a structured, beginner-friendly introduction to American Mahjong designed for brand-new players.

​

You’ll learn the fundamentals step by step in a small-group setting, with guided instruction, hands-on exercises, and plenty of time for questions and practice.

​

Participants will work in pairs, with two players sharing a rack as you learn and practice together. This collaborative format gives everyone a chance to talk through decisions, ask questions, and learn from one another as we work through the game.

​

By the end of the session, you’ll understand the basic flow of the game and have the foundation you need to continue practicing and building confidence.

  • Tile identification and naming

  • How to read the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card

  • Game setup and dealing

  • How to begin selecting and building a hand

  • The Charleston (tile passing)

  • Basic rules and gameplay
