Join Mahj Over Matter for a fun and welcoming evening of American Mahjong at Kumbia in Rockville Town Center. Whether you’re learning for the first time or ready for Open Play, Monday Mahj brings players together for great food, community, and plenty of Mahjong.
What to Expect
Monday Mahj at Kumbia is a social American Mahjong event designed for both brand new players and experienced players who play independently.
The evening is structured to allow everyone to enjoy the game in a way that feels comfortable and fun:
Mahj 101
A dedicated Mahj 101 Mini-Lesson table will be available for brand-new players or those seeking a refresher before playing independently. We’ll cover the tiles, Charleston, NMJL card, and basic gameplay with guided practice throughout the evening.
Open Play
Open Play is designed for players who can play independently and are looking for a fun, social evening of Mahjong. Players will enjoy beautiful Mahjong sets in a relaxed, welcoming environment.
Food, drinks, and extras
Your ticket includes hearty shared appetizers provided by Kumbia. Happy hour pricing on select beverages will be available throughout the evening. Each ticket also includes one raffle entry, and attendees will have a chance to win Mahjong-themed prizes.
Seating
If you’re attending with friends, you’ll have the opportunity to note seating requests at checkout, and we’ll do our best to accommodate them. Coming on your own? You’ll be seated with other players and warmly welcomed at the table.
Full-table options may also be available for groups who prefer to play together.

This ticket includes a 1.5-hour Mahj 101 mini-lesson covering the fundamentals — tile names, reading the NMJL card, basic strategy, and how to begin forming hands — with guided practice throughout the session.
No prior experience required.

Reserve a full table for four players and guarantee seating together.
Full Table (4 players): $155 total — a small per-person savings compared to individual tickets.

Mahj 101 (New Player Mini-Lesson)
For those brand new to Mahjong or looking for a refresher. You’ll learn the basics, including tile names, the Charleston, how to read the NMJL card, and how to begin forming hands.
Open Play
For players who can set up and play independently using the NMJL card.
In-Between Players (“Developing Confidence”)
If you’ve played before but would feel more comfortable at a beginner-friendly table, please complete the Beginner-Friendly Table Request Form after registering.
This helps ensure there’s enough interest to form these tables and allows for thoughtful table placement.
You’re also welcome to arrive a bit early for a quick refresher on setup, dealing, and the Charleston.
During Open Play, this is not a coached event, but we’ll do our best to seat you in a way that supports your comfort and confidence.
If you’re looking for more structured guidance, you may wish to take a Mahj 102 or Mahj 201 lesson.

Check-In & Mingling: 6:00 – 6:30 PM
Event: 6:30 – 8:30 PM

Parking is available in the surface lots and garages throughout Rockville Town Center, including nearby at Trader Joe’s.

Your ticket includes hearty shared appetizers prepared by Kumbia and served throughout the evening.
Happy hour pricing on select beverages will be available throughout the event. Additional food and beverages may be purchased directly from the venue.
One raffle ticket is included with every admission. Mahjong-themed prizes will be awarded during the evening raffle.

Attending with friends? There is space at checkout to list who you’d like to sit with. We’ll do our best to accommodate all seating requests.
Purchasing multiple tickets? Please include your guests’ names in the Guest Information field so we can greet everyone properly at check-in.
Coming on your own? You’ll be seated with other players and warmly welcomed at the table.

📋 Refunds & Policies
All ticket sales are final and non-refundable.
If you’re unable to attend, you are welcome to transfer your ticket to a friend. Please email Jennifer@MahjOverMatter.com with their name so we can update our list.
Events begin promptly, so please arrive during the check-in window to ensure proper seating.
In the rare event of cancellation, all ticket holders will receive a full refund.
